Let Me Play

The title is what caught my attention. The first thing I asked myself was: What is title IX, why have I never heard of it, and why would anybody not let girls play? From the beginning I was hooked and the more I read I began to realize how much I took the freedom to do and become whatever I wanted for granted. As an educator and a woman I hope to empower young women by informing them about title IX and about all the women before us that helped lay the foundation for our rights.

  1. I also did not know what Title IX was until I read the book "Let Me Play." I was disappointed in myself to find out that I was unaware of something so important! Very inspiring!

  2. I did not have any idea what Title IX was prior to reading "Let Me Play." What a special part of history that needs to be brought to the attention of adults and children alike. I think so many people think of the 50's through the early 70's as a time of racial segregation but obviously there was another major fight going on and that was the rights of young girls to be sure all young girls had the same opportunities in school and sports as the boys did. This was an amazing story, one that needs to be continue to be taught to young children. Thank you Karen for bringing light to such an important part of our history.

  3. I also did not know what Title IX was. I was always athletic and participated in several sports in high school.
I just read Chris Crutcher's autobiography and he talks about how girls couldn't play sports when he was in school because his coach said that girls lacked the "emotional strength" necessary to handle the stress and physical endurance to participate. I thought that was funny, but it is also so sad. I can't imagine living in a time when I couldn't participate in anything I wanted to, whether sports, drama, or academics. I always knew that if I wanted to try something, I could. How sad that women didn't always have the choices they have today.
Thanks for writing your book so girls can realize how fortunate they truly are today and that they should use all the opportunities that they now have.
    Thanks, Dana Terrell
